Volvo announces two new petrol engines for the S60 and V60

The already confusing naming system that Volvo has used for its engines over the past few months is about to get a little more complicated. The range of petrol engine blocks is set to grow this autumn for the new S60 and V60, with the T3 and T4 — two options based on the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder GTDi with state-of-the-art direct injection and different performance levels.

The new GTDi engines are made of aluminium to reduce their weight and size, and their compact design also helps in this respect. Direct injection makes the most of the petrol combustion, thereby reducing fuel consumption and polluting emissions. It consists of injectors located above the centre of each piston head, next to the spark plug, which have six holes and can meter the amount of petrol that passes through.

Among the benefits of these injectors are their ability to prepare the engine better for cold starts, to heat the catalytic converter sooner and filter harmful gases earlier, or to fill the combustion chamber more fully so that, for example, the turbo kicks in sooner and greater performance is available at low revs.

These two GTDi engines will be the T3, producing 150 CV and 240 Nm of peak torque and mated only to a six-speed manual gearbox, and the T4, producing 180 CV and up to 270 Nm for a brief extra surge, which can be paired with either the manual transmission or the Powershift automatic, also with six ratios. Both options will include a DRIVe button to activate measures that reduce consumption and emissions: with the manual, there will be a Start&Stop system for stops in traffic, and with the automatic, the gearbox itself disengages the selected gear when it detects that the accelerator is not being pressed, to avoid friction.
