Volvo may be working on a new luxury SUV, the XC100

Volvo is pressing ahead with its plans to fiercely rival the Germans, and to that end it could be developing a new luxury SUV, the XC100.

Volvo plays a vital role in the automotive industry thanks to its range of vehicles, which has always stood out for its unprecedented robustness and safety. Over the years, these characteristics remained intact but were complemented by others such as luxury, exclusivity and design. Today, the Swedish house can boast of rubbing shoulders with illustrious names such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi, which could be about to be put in check by Volvo but, will it be checkmate?

It was at the beginning of this century that the company at hand ventured into the newly born SUV segment with the XC90, a model that caused a sensation and inflicted considerable damage on the German pioneers. Today, Volvo’s SUV range has grown considerably, offering up to three different models that boast advanced technology and a level of safety on a par with that of their predecessors.

But no, Volvo does not intend to sit idly by in the face of the massive wave of SUVs being produced by its most direct rivals. The rumours suggest that the Swedish firm is developing what will be known as the XC100, a model that will sit at the top of the range in an effort to put on the ropes anyone who dared to stand up to it.

Until now, everything pointed to this illustrious new offspring of Volvo occupying a very good position to compete against models such as the BMW X7 or the Mercedes-Benz GLS. However, it seems the company has decided to take another direction and set new plans for this XC100, a model that will apparently take the form of a coupé-style SUV to fight against the Audi Q8, BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé.

In addition to a look and an interior shaped by a new design language, we would find a fresher, more renewing mechanical side. Everything points to hybrid powertrains being the order of the day in the XC100’s engine range, as well as some 100% electric and purely combustion variants, the latter being capable of exceeding 300 CV.

For the moment we are dealing with conjecture, so it is difficult to predict with precision; nevertheless, the reality is that Volvo plans to curb the ambitions of the German titans, whose hegemony is gradually spreading to the rest of the segments. Sooner rather than later we will learn more about this supposed XC100, a model that promises to revolutionise the Swedish firm.
