The automotive industry never stops innovating in many areas, but perhaps the one we are most aware of, or the one that is easiest for us to visualize, is everything related to safety, since it is one we pay the most attention to when buying our next car, and also because, especially in recent years, we are witnessing a technological revolution with the arrival of numerous systems designed to make our driving safer and easier.

In this sense, we see that systems that only a few years ago seemed almost like science fiction are becoming increasingly common. Many that were previously reserved for higher segments are now even fitted as standard on vehicles in lower segments. At the same time, these systems continue to be developed and refined, with new versions appearing in new models that include expanded functions, making our vehicles increasingly safe and efficient.

A couple of months ago, Kia unveiled the new Sorento, a model entering its fourth generation with a completely renewed look both outside and inside, new more efficient engines including hybrid technology, and numerous technological systems across several areas. One of these technologies that we will find in the new Kia Sorento is the Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), which is simply a further step beyond the Blind Spot Assist we already know, and which will be offered for the first time in Europe on a model from the South Korean brand.

In the new Kia Sorento we will find a new fully digital instrument cluster that the brand has named Supervision, made up of a 12.3-inch screen with high definition of 1920 x 720 pixels, which replaces the traditional “dials” to offer more information in a completely clear way. Broadly speaking, alongside the indicators for the speedometer and engine revolutions, the Supervision system features a multifunction display that shows navigation instructions, audio or trip information, vehicle diagnostic alerts, or pop-up notifications regarding the various active safety and driver assistance technologies.

One of the functions also included in the Supervision system is the aforementioned Blind-Spot View Monitor, which will significantly improve our peripheral vision of the vehicle, especially when driving on fast roads. To do this, the Sorento is equipped with high-resolution wide-angle cameras housed in both door mirror casings which, when we activate the indicators to change lanes, display the image from the corresponding camera on the Supervision system, temporarily replacing the speedometer or tachometer (or the hybrid system indicator if we have this unit), thus giving a wider field of view of the vehicle than the mirrors alone.

It should be noted that, along with the Blind-Spot View Monitor, we still have blind-spot detection technology, which helps prevent collisions when there is another vehicle or an object in our blind spot, since the system is able to detect an imminent collision and intervene if it deems necessary to avoid it.

If everything continues according to the planned schedule, the new Kia Sorento is due to go on sale in the third quarter of this year.
