Volvo will give an additional boost to production of its new EX60 SUV due to high demand

In the current context, in which not a few manufacturers are struggling to meet sales targets for their electric models, the EX60 stands out as a success for Volvo, which seems to have understood perfectly what its customers want.

Volvo has decided to increase production of its new mid-size electric SUV, the EX60, after registering demand above the company’s expectations. This new model from the Swedish manufacturer was presented last January and, for the moment, is only available to order in Europe.

The EX60 is produced at Volvo’s main plant in Torslanda (Gothenburg), alongside other models such as the XC60 and V60 with combustion or hybrid engines. Built on the new SPA3 platform, the EX60 stands out for its technical specifications when compared with its direct rivals. Its WLTP range reaches up to 810 km in some versions, offering a considerable charging power of 370 kW, which allows it to charge to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes. All this from just over 60 thousand euros for the entry-level version of the range, with a single rear-axle motor.

With this introduction, it is no surprise that orders for the EX60 in Europe have skyrocketed. According to the company, in just a few weeks since its presentation, almost all the main European markets are recording orders well above estimates, with Sweden leading with more than 3,000 firm orders. Germany, on the other hand, is another European market where the EX60 has been notably well received by the public. Volvo says the number of reservations for the EX60 it is receiving daily is even higher than what the EX30 had after its debut in 2023, which is entirely unexpected given that the latter is a much more affordable model.

Volvo reorganises its production plans for 2026

To meet this unexpected volume of demand, the Swedish manufacturer has already begun negotiating with the unions to keep the Torslanda plant open one more week during the summer, something that had never happened until now. This is just one of the measures Volvo plans to take with the ultimate goal of increasing EX60 production volumes for 2026. In any case, the company is aware that haste is never good and says it will prioritise a gradual and careful increase in production to guarantee maximum quality in every unit.

“That so many customers have reserved the EX60 in its first month has exceeded our expectations. We are very encouraged by this strong reception for our new electric SUV, and we are already reviewing our production plans for 2026, ahead of the start of customer deliveries next month.”

Finally, it should be noted that orders in the United States will open later this coming spring, which suggests that the European success could also extend to the North American market.
