Wards Auto unveils its annual list of best engines for 2013

Wards Auto has announced its list of best engines for 2013, which notes that the vast majority of the award-winning engines have been four-cylinder turbo units. This year, no hybrid, electric or diesel engine has received any mention.

As every year, Wards Auto awards those it considers will be the best engines to power the models of the following year. A particular feature of the list they have released this year is that they have not included any diesel or hybrid engine, an unprecedented fact, so let’s look at which ones have been favoured.

And it has been six turbo engines and seven direct-injection engines that have taken the awards this year, half of them being small four-cylinder engines, which is precisely what we have seen most marked in the engine trend of most new models.

The winners in their respective categories are the following:

  • 3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 (Audi S5)
  • 2.0L N20 Turbo DOHC I-4 (BMW 328i)
  • 3.0L N55 Turbo DOHC I-6 (BMW 135is coupe)
  • 3.6L Pentastar DOHC V-6 (Ram 1500)
  • 2.0L EcoBoost DOHC I-4 (Ford Focus ST/Taurus)
  • 5.8L Supercharged DOHC V-8 (Ford Shelby GT500)
  • 2.0L Turbo DOHC I-4 (Cadillac ATS)
  • 2.4L DOHC I-4 (Honda Accord Sport)
  • 3.5L SOHC V-6 (Honda Accord)
  • 2.0L FA DOHC H-4 Boxer (Subaru BRZ)

Wards notes that whereas just 3 or 4 years ago the winners were V10 or V8 engines, this year the situation has been completely different, so it is quite an achievement that some engines such as the V6 of the Audi S5 still make it onto this list.
