Lexus already has its new model ready. We are talking about the NX, a crossover slightly smaller than the RX, which will start production in July of this same year.

Highmotor has already had the opportunity to see it in person, although only in a static setting. Enough to convey the impressions this model gives us.

The exterior design of the NX leaves no one indifferent. It is, without a doubt, the most aggressive crossover we can find on the market, with shapes that overshadow those of some of its rivals, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLK or the Audi Q5.

The front is remarkably sharp. It is dominated by the large central grille, a trademark of the house, which is now present on all models from the Japanese brand. The LED headlights -optionally BiLED- are also part of the design ensemble and remain divided into two sections, with the daytime running lights positioned somewhat lower, in the style of the IS.

The side shares certain similarities with the RX, especially the upper half, with a sufficient glazed surface and nothing more. We find numerous ridges running along the bodywork, creating light and shadow depending on where the light falls. The effect is very special, far more striking in person than in photographs.

The rear has been meticulously detailed. The large tailgate features electric opening and closing, one more touch of convenience that many customers will appreciate. The rear lights are part of the overall design, with shapes that begin at the rear wheel arches and extend well onto the tailgate. The exhaust outlets remain hidden, emphasising the “eco” character of the NX.

In the interior, we find a very well-built cabin (as is customary in Lexus) where the centre console stands out, with lines that show a parallel with the front grille.

The dashboard can be fully upholstered in leather, as can the centre tunnel.
Following the lines of the new Lexus models, we find a large colour screen at the top of the dashboard.

A comprehensive multimedia system displayed on that screen and operated through the new Lexus Touch system, which replaces the previous control system with a mouse-like controller. With this new technology, we find a touch-sensitive touchpad like those fitted to laptop computers.

The seats also play an important role in the NX. Depending on the chosen trim, they can be upholstered in cloth or leather, and feature sporty shapes and reinforcements if the F-Sport line is chosen. Depending on the version, they may include heating, ventilation and electric adjustment, as well as the steering column.

The rear is sufficiently spacious for two occupants provided the optional glass panoramic roof is not fitted. In that case, headroom is noticeably reduced, so the second row would only be comfortable for children or shorter people. Legroom, however, is more than adequate in any situation.

The boot of the NX offers 555 litres in the hybrid version (NX300h) and 580 litres in the NX200t. It is a very good capacity, among the best in its class. The rear seat is foldable -optionally electrically foldable- since the batteries are located in the vehicle floor.

In terms of mechanics, the NX can be fitted with two different engines. The first is a new four-cylinder, two-litre turbocharged unit, a first for the brand. Thanks to turbo supercharging, it offers excellent refinement and performance on a par with its rivals. As soon as we have more data, we will tell you all about it.

The other version is the NX300h, with hybrid technology. Despite the nomenclature, the powertrain is not the same as that of the IS and GS300h. The petrol engine is still a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle unit, but it has been completely redesigned to meet the specific demands of the SUV. Total system output is 197 CV, with an average consumption of 5.1 litres.

Depending on the chosen version, the NX300h can be rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In the latter case, an extra electric motor is added on the rear axle. As is customary in the Toyota Group, the gearbox is a CVT that prioritises economy over performance.

This NX will go on sale with a base price of 38,900€ for the ECO version, which already comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, an alarm and electric mirrors, among other features. The next equipment level, called Corporate, is aimed mainly at companies and fleet operators. It will launch at an initial price of 40,200€ and adds rain and light sensors, Lexus Media Display or rear camera, among other features. These two equipment levels will only be combined with 2WD drive.

The next equipment level is the one called Executive. According to Lexus’s forecasts, this trim will account for most sales, adding all-wheel drive, leather upholstery, the Smart Entry system or 18-inch alloy wheels, among other features, to the previous equipment. Its price starts at 46,700€.

The F-Sport line tops the range for those seeking sportiness. It adds exclusive details to the previous equipment, such as Bi-LED headlights, sport seats, AVS adaptive suspension or Performance Dampers, a damping system that increases stiffness and improves cornering. It can be purchased from 55,900€.

To complete the range, we have the Luxury version, which at 64,500€ sits as the top model in the line-up. Its equipment is extremely extensive, including ventilated electric seats, 360º cameras, Head-Up Display and adaptive high-beam headlights, among others.

The forecasts for this model point to 400 units sold this year, a figure that rises to 1,200 by 2015. The first units are expected to reach dealerships late in the year.
