What to check on your car during winter

The arrival of winter means that the car is exposed to low temperatures, so it is necessary to check all mechanical components, fluids and safety systems.

Winter is arriving with full force these days and although we begin to prepare to spend these cold months, sometimes it is forgotten that the car also needs to be inspected so that it gets through them without problems. Just as in summer high temperatures can cause problems for the vehicle, in winter we can run into things that do not work as they should.

That is why we are going to offer you some tips so that you can carry out an inspection of your vehicle and get it ready to face the winter cold without risks. These are the main points you should check on your car so that the cold does not give you any scares.

  • The battery: This component suffers quite a lot from high and low temperatures. In low temperatures, the battery can easily discharge. Check its condition before the cold arrives and pay attention if it seems to lack strength when starting. In the case of an electric vehicle, the cold can affect its range, so make sure it is in good condition.
  • The tyres: The most important element for the car’s safety also suffers during winter. Pressure can vary when it is very cold, so make sure it is correct. Rain can cause aquaplaning, so check the tread depth of the tyre and do not wear it down to the legal limit. If you live in an area where winters are harsh, it is advisable to switch to winter tyres.
  • The brakes: Rainwater, frost and other winter conditions can cause brake faults, which is a serious safety risk. If the brakes behave unusually in any way, take the car to the workshop. It may be something temporary that poses no real risk, but it is better to be sure than to have a scare while driving. In addition, follow the recommendation to change the brake fluid every five years.
  • The windscreen: We have discussed in other articles how you should act to remove ice from the windscreen. You should not blow hot air onto a frozen windscreen, because the thermal shock can crack the glass. Nor should you pour hot water on the ice, for the same reason.
  • The headlights: Visibility is essential in these months when it gets dark very early. There are also times of fog and others when rain reduces visibility. So it is advisable to check the lights, make sure no bulbs have blown or, in the case of newer cars, that all the LED diodes work correctly.
  • Wait before moving off: In very cold weather, let the engine run for a reasonable time before setting off. This way the car’s fluids reach their ideal operating temperature and work as they should, avoiding engine problems.
  • The antifreeze: This fluid stops the coolant in the radiator from freezing. Its service life is set at four years, so once that time has passed it should be replaced to avoid problems.

These are some tips to keep in mind for the winter months. That said, even when it is cold, remember that the car must keep working normally. If you notice any strange noise, unusual behaviour from the steering, brakes or traction, take the car to the workshop and so avoid risky situations while driving.
