Will Porsche launch a 100% electric Macan?

Porsche shows its intention to produce an electric Macan. The brand believes that electrifying its models will improve its sales.

The future plans of the Volkswagen group involve progressively launching more than 30 electric vehicles by 2025, to which Porsche also wants to add electrified versions of its models.

During the press days of the Geneva International Motor Show, Porsche’s head of sales, Detlev von Platen, admitted that an electric version of the Macan has been considered. “We have other ideas beyond the Mission E. The Macan is, of course, a type of model we could consider as an electrified vehicle,” von Platen stated.

Porsche seems set to electrify most of its range, but focusing on hybrid engines, combining combustion engines with electric motors, as we have already seen with the recently presented Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. Some of the models from the Stuttgart house that will receive hybrid versions in the coming years will be the 911, the Boxster and the Cayman. For von Platen, this strategy of electrifying Porsche’s models will improve its sales results, reaching figures for 2020 of around 300,000 units sold in a year.

“This increase will come as a consequence of expanding our product range. We are happy to grow and we want to, but we must maintain our exclusivity,” von Platen added.

In addition to the possible new electric Macan, Porsche will continue developing what will be its first model powered exclusively by an electric battery: Mission E. This model is expected to reach the market in 2020 and will compete with vehicles such as the Tesla Model S. Porsche has invested more than $1,000 million to develop the Mission E project.
