Will the Subaru BRZ tS be the closest thing we see to the STI?

The Subaru BRZ tS will arrive in 2018 with the same 200 CV power as the standard model but with more sporty tuning

Ever since Subaru launched the BRZ in 2012, there have been rumours of a sportier STI version aimed at the European market, but so far the brand has not officially confirmed anything. Meanwhile, the American market has received a sportier version, and in early 2018 the new Subaru BRZ tS will already be available at dealerships, just as it was in Japan two years ago.

Subaru will limit production of the BRZ tS to 500 units, a model that will go on sale in the United States in the first quarter of next year alongside the WRX STI Type RA, of which 500 units will also be produced.

Although the Subaru BRZ tS offers the same power as the standard version, it includes one of the most complete sport kitsThe Subaru BRZ tS will offer better dynamic performance thanks to improvements to its aerodynamics, the introduction of a new, sportier suspension and new Brembo brakes. Among the elements included in the BRZ tS aerodynamic kit, the adjustable rear spoiler made of carbon fibre stands out.

As for the engine, there are no changes: it keeps the same 2.0-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder unit, capable of reaching 200 CV. In addition, the Subaru BRZ tS features new 18-inch lighter wheels bearing the STI badge, which come fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres.

The interior features sport seats with black leather and Alcantara upholstery, along with other details finished in red, such as the stitching and seat belts. The limited edition will be available in three colours: WR Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Silica and Crystal White Pearl.

Both the US launch of the BRZ tS and that of the WRX STI Type RA form part of Subaru’s strategic plan to increase the presence of its sportier versions (STI) in the world’s largest market. Although for the moment these two models are only available in the US, we hope that Subaru fans in Europe will soon be able to enjoy a sportier version of the BRZ.
