2013, the British luxury off-roader returns

Land Rover launches the fourth generation of its flagship off-roader, the Range Rover.

Plenty of spy photos and a long wait, but it has been well worth it. Let me introduce you to the fourth generation of the most famous off-roader of all time, the Range Rover 2013. Although it may look similar to the current model, it has little in common with it. A lighter body and a hybrid powertrain combining a diesel engine with an electric motor.

This luxury British off-roader will reach the Spanish market with a starting price of no less than €98,500, rising to an incredible €145,600 for the top-of-the-range version. It will be on sale from 6 September, but we won’t see it first-hand until the start of the Paris Motor Show.

Thanks to the use of lighter and stronger materials such as aluminium in the chassis, weight has been considerably reduced. In addition, according to Land Rover, legroom for rear passengers increases by 12 cm. Buyers will be able to choose between four or five seats.

Inside, noble materials such as wood and leather take centre stage and cover even the smallest detail. You can tell it is a car costing more than €100,000. Even so, the dashboard, allowing for the differences, reminds me greatly of another vehicle in the range that is much cheaper. Yes, I mean the Evoque. A new feature is the Command Driving Position, a device that raises the driver’s seating height by 90 mm, providing an imaginary sense of confidence and control.

This vehicle has always performed best off-road, and in this generation the ingredients have not changed. To do so, a new air suspension system has been fitted, along with variable-stiffness dampers and, in some cases, active anti-roll bars. Of course, Terrain Response remains standard. This system varies the response of the engine, suspension, gearbox and ABS depending on the terrain you are driving on. The low-range ratio is 2.93 to 1.

In the mechanical section we find a 5-litre V8 petrol engine capable of producing 510 CV. At the other end of the range there are two diesel variants. The first is a 258 CV V6, and the latter is a 4.4-litre V8 offering 339 CV. In the middle ground, a hybrid powertrain combining a diesel block with an electric motor will be offered (more information).

It will only be available with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive, with a limited-slip differential as an option.
