Every day we read news about the latest-generation hybrid cars or electric cars with enviable acceleration, but the truth is that in Spain these cars are still very far from the real world. In both cases, the idea of owning one of these cars, along with its advantages and technological advances, has yet to take deep root among the average driver. 39% of people in Spain prefer a sportier model, or a conventional car over a hybrid or electric one.

According to the study Green car marketing, carried out by the business school ESCP Europe, even though nearly all respondents say they are concerned about the environment, almost 40% say they are not interested in a hybrid car. Of that percentage, 33% consider hybrid cars too expensive and not worth the investment.

Despite the government’s efforts to promote the initiative of filling Spain with electric cars, brands do not do much to spread the new technology or make it easier for people to drive one of these cars (through test drives, advertising, events, etc.). Such is the lack of awareness that 96% of the respondents in the mentioned study say they don’t know anyone who owns a hybrid car. And the truth is that I also fall into that 96%.

With first-hand knowledge, I must say this situation does not only happen in Spain. Outside Japan and the USA, there is not yet much interest in seeing the streets full of electric cars, at least until they become a little more affordable. As for hybrids, sales are slow, and the only hybrid you see on the streets outside Spain is mainly the Toyota Prius and some model from Honda. The rest of the models and brands go almost unnoticed.
