A remote-controlled Audi TT for Pikes Peak

Students at Stanford University developed the technology needed to drive a car remotely, via a remote control or radio control. The latest example of how advanced the project is, is this Audi TT that can be driven by computer and that will be part of the final project, to race a car using this type of technology on the Pikes Peak hill climb next year.
Through the video (after the jump), we can follow the progress of the remote-controlled car project. From the primitive prototype, a sort of remote-controlled go-kart, to the Audi TT they test on a salt flat, possibly Bonneville. Clearly Audi had a lot to do with it, from the Audi TT to the flawless production of the video, as well as the official announcement of the Pikes Peak entry, ending with a “Audi logo” that the TT itself draws on the ground. Plus, with unforgettable images of the Audi Quattro that won Pikes Peak in 1987.
The Audi TTS was modified with sensors, GPS guidance and a good number of systems controlled remotely by several computers. This Audi holds the top speed record for a remote-controlled car, at 208 km/h. Fortunately the vehicle is not designed for use on the streets, since it will only be used to study how to avoid accidents. The idea is to have intelligent cars in the future (not just intelligent systems) that can prevent fatal accidents.
Finally, an anecdotal detail. Like any good prototype of a worthy scientific project, this Audi has a name. Its name is Shelley. A fitting tribute to the Frenchwoman Michèle Mouton, who came close to becoming rally champion, with the Audi.
