An even more radical four-door Mercedes-AMG GT is on the horizon
Mercedes-AMG is currently developing the four-door GT 73, the sportiest variant of the German saloon, which will feature hybrid technology.

Mercedes-AMG could be about to add to its lineup a new variant, which would debut on the exhilarating four-door AMG GT. This saloon sits at the top of the AMG range thanks to its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, an engine that in this case produces a staggering 639 CV. However, the engineers at the Stuttgart brand want to go further, something made possible by the EQ Power technology they could apply to this upcoming variant.
Not long ago, Mercedes-Benz showed a video in which a partially camouflaged four-door AMG GT could be seen accelerating in complete silence, which set off all the alarm bells. Those alarms suggested it could be a disguised test mule of the future EQS, but the truth is that Mercedes-AMG is developing a hybrid version of its most radical saloon.
Several test units have been spotted running on the road in order to analyse and refine every last detail. Although Mercedes-AMG already offers some models with mild-hybrid technology, such as the CLS and E 53 AMG, this will be the first time it develops a high-performance vehicle that is fully hybrid.

Behind this configuration, the number 73 is expected to appear, a designation the German brand could later use on other models. Nevertheless, the four-door AMG GT will be the one to debut it, with an outrageous power output designed to outshine its rivals and stand alone at the top until further notice.
The same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine would power this new version of the German saloon, but with a very special addition. The engineers at Mercedes-AMG will take the opportunity to fit a secondary motor that is not only capable of pushing total output beyond 800 CV, but also of offering a 100% electric mode and the coveted ECO label from the DGT.

It is true that, with the coronavirus still relentlessly affecting us, it is hard to predict a launch date with any confidence, but given the level of development shown by the supposed AMG GT 73, it could be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show later this same year. Either way, we are on the verge of witnessing a new era within Mercedes-AMG, a brand that will also soon adopt electric vehicles.
