An impressive challenge: running a Bobsled track with a Subaru WRX STI

Rally driver Mark Higgins, behind the wheel of this sporty model fitted with adapted tyres, has completed the course of an ice Bobsleigh track

Speed is something we all have in our blood. We love cars, but also other ways of going fast. So imagine combining two of these disciplines that have speed as their main selling point, and feeling the speed of a rally car racing around a circuit that was not designed for this type of vehicle. A Bobsled track, for example.

You know, that competition held on an ice track, where vehicles that run purely on momentum, without any engine, reach extreme speeds. Well, let’s remove those competition sleds, designed to make the most of every slope on the track to gain speed, and put a car on that course. Can you imagine it?

Well, don’t. Watch this video, where the Subaru WRX STI, driven by rally driver Mark Higgins, has overcome one of the most impressive challenges a driver can face in these conditions. The car took on the challenge of running this track, full of downhill sections that help sleds build up speed. Something that is not good news for a car, and which presents a series of obstacles that could be considered insurmountable for it.

But this model managed to get through the test, although, admittedly, it had to adapt to the track conditions to take on the challenge. The main change was swapping the tyres it normally wears for others fitted with studs to increase grip on the ice that forms the Bobsled track. With this type of tyre, the Subaru WRX STI can tackle the most impressive corners and the demanding course of the Bobsled track in St. Moritz, inaugurated in 1904, which saw the birth of this Olympic discipline. Isn’t that a spectacular video?
