At last Aston Martin has revealed the DB5 Goldfinger, an exclusive tribute to the car and James Bond featuring fully functional gadgets

A James Bond film is hard to imagine without a Aston Martin appearing in it, some more iconic than others. In 1965 actor Sean Connery starred in Goldfinger, taking the wheel of a DB5, a model that over the years has become a genuine and highly coveted classic, appearing in seven feature films starring the super agent 007. Now the brand has wanted to pay tribute to the cherished Aston Martin DB5 by including some of the gadgets it carried in the films.

A couple of years ago the British brand previewed this project, in which the DB5 would be the star of an exclusive limited edition that would let us feel like James Bond behind its wheel. LEGO even wanted to pay homage to this model with a set of more than 1,200 pieces. Now the Aston Martin project finally sees the light of day, something that will only be accessible to 25 people who can get their hands on one of these spectacular units created together with the film production company behind the James Bond movies.

And why has Aston Martin worked together with the production company to create these 25 units? Because, as I mentioned at the beginning, the Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger features several fully functional devices like those the secret service engineers installed in James Bond’s cars for his missions. These have even been supervised by Chris Corbould, in charge of the special effects produced for the films.

The 25 units created are an exact reproduction of the Aston Martin DB5 seen on cinema screens, even retaining the original Silver Birch paint, which is offered only for the bodywork, with some modifications to maintain the high standards of quality, construction and reliability that a model like this deserves. Under the bonnet is the same 4,000 cc naturally aspirated aluminium engine, a straight-six with three SU carburettors and oil cooling, capable of delivering 290 CV to the rear axle, linked to a five-speed ZF gearbox with a limited-slip mechanical differential.

It will not be the only thing that keeps the essence of the original Aston Martin DB5: for example, braking is handled by servo-assisted hydraulic disc brakes of Girling type, the steering is rack and pinion without power assistance, and the front suspension consists of coil-over-spring and damper units with an anti-roll bar, while the rear suspension is a live axle with radius arms and a Watt linkage.

So far everything is in order, but now come the toys these Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger cars incorporate. On the exterior we will find

    :

  • System that simulates a smokescreen at the rear.

  • Simulated oil-dispensing system, also at the rear.

  • Rotating number plates both front and rear.

  • Simulated machine guns.

  • Rear bulletproof shield.

  • Rear and front rams.

  • Tyre simulator.

  • Optionally, a removable roof panel where the passenger seat is.

That is not all, since once we are behind the wheel we will also find more gadgets inside, such as

    :

  • Map with simulated radar tracking screen.

  • Telephone located in the driver’s door.

  • Actuator button on the gear knob.

  • Armrest and central switching console installed in the centre console.

  • Hidden weapons under the seat and in the storage tray.

  • Remote control for activating the systems.

The lucky buyers who have been able to pay the
more than 2.5 million euros plus taxes this collector’s jewel costs, bearing in mind that it is not approved for road use§h65§, have already begun receiving their very special DB5 Goldfinger units.
