Audi A3 Sportback e-tron: Minimum consumption, maximum performance

Audi has already revealed all the technical details of the new version of the A3. We are talking about the A3 Sportback e-tron, the most eco-friendly alternative in the German compact’s range.
It becomes the first plug-in hybrid of Audi, combining an electric motor with a petrol combustion engine that keeps consumption very low while offering a range unthinkable for any fully electric vehicle.
The design of this e-tron version does not differ much from any other version in the range. Both inside and out, the specific details are minimal and can be counted on the fingers of one hand: an exclusive front grille, new-design alloy wheels and redesigned bumpers. Inside, the instrument cluster adapts to the car’s new technology, displaying a power meter and different energy flow graphics.
The changes lie in the engineering. The first engine we encounter is a 75 kW electric motor that can propel the A3 autonomously for up to 50 km, thanks to the lithium-ion batteries located in the flat floor of the vehicle. Most everyday journeys are shorter than those 50 km, so the A3 e-tron will run for most of the time purely on electric power.

On the other hand, the combustion engine, a unit from the TFSI family with a displacement of 1.4 litres and an output of 150 CV. Its maximum torque is 250 Nm, delivered between 1,750 and 4,000 rpm. In this way, it works perfectly with the power delivery of the electric motor, so that together they total 204 CV and 350 Nm.
Thanks to this combination, the A3 Sportback e-tron can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 222 km/h.
The homologated consumption is 1.5 litres per 100 km, and the total combined range reaches 940 km.
