Audi is bidding farewell to the A1 and Q2 to make way for an electric model

These two entry-level models in the Audi range will stop being manufactured in 2026, although Audi is preparing an electric model to fill that gap.

Many brands are moving away from entry-level versions of the range, city cars. And this means the focus shifts to slightly larger cars. Audi also seems to be following this trend, and it has just been announced that it will end production of the Audi A1 and the Audi Q2, two small models that serve as the brand’s entry point.

There is still time before production of these two models is halted, so anyone interested in these two entry-level models can still get hold of one. The end-of-production date will be in 2026. From that point on, the Audi lineup will lose two reference models and will shift toward larger cars.

Audi’s intention bears a considerable resemblance to the strategy of Mercedes, which has also dropped the idea of the A-Class and is seeking to win market share in the upper segments. However, the Audi A3 will remain on the market and will stay available for buyers looking for this type of vehicle, although it will be larger and also more expensive.

An electric successor

These two vehicles will have a successor, although it will not be a car identical to these two. The new model, which will be electric and arrive in a few years, has no name yet, and it is intended to sit in this segment. It is expected to be below the Q4 e-tron and to keep the Premium spirit that Audi always offers.

This new model will in all likelihood be manufactured at the Ingolstadt plant and is expected to use the MEB platform, which other Volkswagen models already use. The SSP platform will arrive in 2028, but Audi has preferred to bring forward production with this platform, which is already available, so the car can be on the market sooner.

The aim is to increase the Premium experience in the compact segment, with quality materials and good equipment. The look sought is a blend of compact and crossover, as is the case with the Elroq, the model it will be modelled on. This model is expected to have an estimated price of 35,000 euros.
