Being polite doesn't mean lacking courage: this is how Mercedes congratulates BMW on its centenary

The time has come when some automotive brands begin to blow out the 100 candles and enter their second century of operation. One of them is BMW, which began its activity on 7 March 1916, which means exactly one hundred years ago. It has been a year full of novelties, above all with the imminent, more or less, arrival of autonomous driving.

BMW is preparing for new challenges in the coming years, as are the others. But they, of course, do not have a century of experience. And the celebration of this first centenary is being observed across the industry, not only at the company itself, as other firms have wanted to join, with all the sportsmanship possible, in the congratulations. And, surprise, the one that has created a video to do so, which you can watch at the end of the article.

Sportsmanship, fair play… and a bit of mischief

After seeing how rival companies of the most varied kinds behave, it is a delight to see how these two motoring giants play, showing due respect and being very courteous to each other. The video opens with a grille that immediately makes us think of BMW, although the name is never given. In this way, even though they congratulate the brand on its 100 years, its name does not appear in an official Mercedes video, which would indeed be problematic.

The well-known congratulatory song is accompanied by the text “Thanks for 100 years of competition“. Afterwards, it is where it manages to draw a smile, since Mercedes emphasises its greater age and experience, saying that “the previous 30 years were very boring“.

It is a delight to see a picture of fair play, at least in this respect, combining respect with a sense of humour that is not free of a bit of mischief. You can watch the video below and comment. Do you think this way of celebrating the centenary of one of its most important rivals is appropriate?

Me parece espectacular, ingenioso, creativo, considerado, elegante y con un pícaro y exquisito sentido del humor. Puro Mercedes.
