BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo: the result of the evolution of the BMW Series 5 GT

The time has come to say goodbye to the Series 5 Gran Turismo and welcome the BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo, now with a new name, design and more space

Earlier this year, we previewed the news that BMW plans to unveil between now and 2021, with the arrival of new models and new generations. Among the first to arrive is the BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo, a model created to replace the Series 5 Gran Turismo, retaining part of its technology but now with a new design and improvements in several areas.

The first improvement affects the comfort of passengers in the BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo. Its width of 1,902 millimetres remains the same as the Series 5, but its length has grown by 87 mm to 5,091 mm, while its height is now 1,538 mm. Not only will we feel more comfortable in its spacious interior, but we will also be able to store more luggage in its boot thanks to its 610 L capacity, 110 litres more than the outgoing model, although we can increase it to 1,800 L by folding the seats down in the available 40:20:40 split.

Continuing with the interior, the front offers a clean design and excellent finishes in keeping with what BMW has accustomed us to, with a driver-oriented cockpit so that everything needed is within reach. In the rear there is room for three people who, despite the coupé-style roofline of this vehicle, should not have problems with headroom, even though the now flatter line of its design may give the impression of less space.

In terms of equipment and technology, we find the latest advances applied to the new BMW Series 5, with the subtle difference that the BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo still manages to shed 150 kg from its overall weight compared with its predecessor, logically thanks to the use of even lighter materials. Furthermore, its aerodynamic properties have also been improved thanks to its new design, which, together with the arrival of optimised engines with greater power, gives it a more sporty yet efficient character.

The engine range of the BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo will consist, at launch, of two petrol engines and one diesel option, all linked to the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. On the petrol side, the basic option is the 630i with 258 CV and 400 Nm of torque and, alternatively, the 640i with 340 CV and 450 Nm, optionally available with xDrive permanent all-wheel drive. On the diesel side we have the 630d with 265 CV and 620 Nm of torque, also available with the xDrive option.

And when will we be able to enjoy the BMW Series 6 Gran Turismo on the roads? First we will have to wait for its presentation at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September, while its market launch is scheduled for November.
