Bosch steps into the spotlight: it developed the cheat software of Volkswagen only for internal tests

The issue of the illegal polluting emissions of the German giant Volkswagen is far from being resolved.

Now it is Bosch, the supplier to the automotive group, that comes out in its own defense in the case of the illegal programming of the diesel engines.

As everyone already knows, the German giant Volkswagen is involved in a major environmental scandal worldwide, in which more than 11 million vehicles of the group’s various brands have been sold with a system that modifies the operation of the engine in order to get past the strict anti-pollution standards for diesel engines.

This software, capable of detecting when the vehicle is undergoing an emissions test, was created and developed at the time by Bosch at the request of Volkswagen itself. Thus, Bosch developed it and handed it over to VW with the clear purpose of using it solely and exclusively in the manufacturer’s internal tests. All of this in 2007, when Bosch had already warned Volkswagen that using this software in cars intended for public roads was illegal.

However, Volkswagen did not heed Bosch, which warned again about the misuse of this software in 2011, and began installing it in production vehicles, giving rise to what today we know as “dieselgate”, one of the biggest industrial and environmental scandals in automotive history.

In this way, today it is known that both the 2.0 TDI and the 1.6 TDI are affected by this software, something that seems likely to extend to other four-cylinder engines such as the 1.2 TDI, which has also been subject to checks in recent days. Furthermore, the EPA has announced that in the coming days an investigation will be launched into the 3.0 TDI V6 engine, which would increase the number of units involved even further, also including brands such as Porsche.
