Confirmed: the Volkswagen Golf will be fully electric and will arrive in 2027

The popular compact from the German brand will abandon the combustion engine in 2027 and will remain a benchmark model in the Volkswagen lineup.

The Volkswagen Golf has had its current generation on the market for a few years now, but it will keep it until 2027. In a few months it will receive an update, which will allow it to remain one of the brand’s most popular cars for a few more years. But that year will be the one in which its commercial life ends and it will be replaced by the next generation.

This eighth generation will be the last to have a combustion engine, since the next one will only have electric motorization. Yes, we know there is already an electric Golf, but the new generation of the model will have novelties in this regard and will not be a mere adaptation of the car to electric mobility; instead, it will become a model with its own characteristics.

An update to comply with Euro 7 regulations

The update the model will soon receive has much to do with the entry into force of the Euro 7 regulations, which will arrive in 2025. In this way, the Volkswagen Golf will be able to keep its combustion engine until 2027, when the generation change and the shift to a fully electric model will take place.

To achieve considerable improvements in the manufacturing of the new electric Golf, the new platform of the Volkswagen Group has been chosen, called SSP. This will replace the current MEB platform for electric vehicles and will introduce many novelties compared with the current MQB platform used by the combustion-engine model.

The SSP platform will allow an 800 V architecture. This will enable a charging power of up to 300 kW, which will allow the battery to charge from 10 to 80% in about 12 minutes. This exceeds the maximum rate of the brand’s ID models, which only reach 175 kW.

Another important point will be the price of the new Volkswagen Golf. The brand wants the price of this electric model to match the price of the combustion-engine version. In addition, the design will be updated as an electric model, but the aim is to keep the car’s look so that it preserves the essence of the iconic compact.
