Corvette R Project: GM's Mustang-E could be on its way
According to a report, Chevrolet would have given Corvette the go-ahead to launch a new fully electric model with crossover-style bodywork
The author of this article cannot deny that, more than a year into its run, the new Ford Mustang Mach-E still sets their teeth on edge when they think about, write about or see it. The logic of reformulating a name or creating subsidiary brands tied to a lifestyle will have its commercial and psychological justification, but for a traditional mind, abrupt changes, disruption of established inertia, and reusing, if not tarnishing, the name of the American stallion is little short of heresy. Now, judging by recent market moves and the rumours coming out of the United States, this writer is bracing for his pride to be wounded once again by the lineage within Chevrolet’s brand, if it turns out that the Corvette R Project is aimed at bringing to life an electric crossover under the legendary badge of the crossed flags.
While we have already grown used to brands such as Porsche, Lamborghini or Maserati making high-performance SUVs the foundation of their business pyramid, and to other premium manufacturers such as Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz having replicated this with luxury lines, it has allowed mainstream makers to do the same with a range of crossovers that has taken over the dealerships and seems to have no maximum quota of
With Ford and its Mustang Mach-E, it must be said, an imposing vehicle that, judging by what our colleague was able to enjoy on board, is a Mustang in every sense, made for and by this new decade of this millennium and this new electric era of the automotive industry, Chevrolet would have given the green light to the R Project or R Brand, depending on which sources are consulted, under the Corvette family. That is, the Corvette electric crossover.

Starting from the presentation of the latest and current generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, the C8, its unveiling was a total disruption of everything we had seen in its nearly three-quarters of a century of life, since this Corvette C8 is the first car in the saga to place its mechanical heart in a mid-rear position, rather than in the front.
Why the Corvette R Project makes a lot of sense
This tendency to break with established norms allows the most devoted and fervent followers of the brand of the crossed flags to voice a heresy against the marque itself, since if what Bloomberg takes for granted, based on information it has received and published, is true, Corvette would have an electric crossover in its dealerships from 2025.

On the other hand, the recent announcement by General Motors, the parent group that includes Chevrolet, along with other iconic brands linked to the culture of owners’ affinity with nearby petrol stations, such as Cadillac, Buick and GMC itself, under the shared roadmap built on the mantra “Everybody in“, has already announced the launch of up to 30 new 100 percent electric vehicles across all its brands, based on the Ultium technology already fitted to the GMC Hummer EV, before 2025. Therefore, one of them could undoubtedly be the hypothetical Corvette R Project.
