Electric vehicle sales of BMW grew 75 percent in 2023

Sales of fully electric vehicles from BMW continue to grow for another year, as do expectations for the new year 2024 that begins now and the next one that is on its way

With 2023 now over, it is time for car manufacturers to look back and analyse the results obtained over the last twelve months. This is precisely what the BMW Group has done, putting forward a series of figures that prove the success of the company’s strategy in its transition towards electric mobility.

In this way, the group as a whole sold 376,183 fully electric vehicles over the past year. That is 74.4 percent more than the previous year. As expected, the launch of new electric models from the BMW brand has made the Bavarian firm the one growing the most, while MINI has recorded a slight decline.

To put this in context, in 2022 the BMW Group sold 215,755 electric vehicles from the BMW and MINI brands, a year-on-year increase of 107.7 percent. This means that in 2023, with 330,596 units, the BMW brand alone sold more electric vehicles than the entire BMW Group had one year earlier.

The best is yet to come

Looking ahead to 2024, BMW has set itself the target that one in every five vehicles sold will be electric. A ratio that should rise to one in four in 2025 if the company’s expectations are met.

In this regard, Jochen Goller, current member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and head of sales, told the media that the company has seen strong demand for fully electric vehicles and, given the broad range of such vehicles the brand currently offers, the management of BMW is confident of selling more than half a million units over the course of this new year 2024.

Taking into account the different versions available for each model, BMW currently offers 18 different configurations of electric models, covering a wide variety of segments, from compact SUVs with the iX1 to luxury saloons with the i7. Not forgetting the iX3 and iX SUVs, nor the i4 sports coupé or the new i5 saloon.

BMW has not wished to give specific details on sales of each of the electric models it offers, but it has highlighted that both the iX1 and the i4 have accounted for a large share of total sales.
