Elon Musk confirms that the long-awaited refreshed Model Y "Juniper" will not reach the market in 2024
If you intend to buy a Tesla Model Y but have been waiting to see whether the refreshed version was coming out, don’t waste any more time. That is not going to happen until 2025 at the earliest.
Addressing the strong rumours about an imminent Model Y refresh, the head of Tesla has just confirmed that the company does not plan to launch an updated version of its popular compact SUV this year, following the same design line we have already seen in the new Model 3. It therefore seems we will have to wait until 2025 for this to happen, although this has not been confirmed either and no specific date is known.
Tesla tends to improve its vehicles continuously, every few months as they are produced. These improvements are usually minor, small touch-ups or adjustments. However, it eventually also carries out major renovations, as happened with the new Model S and X in 2021, or the more recent refresh of the Model 3 “Highland”. That is why it should now be the Model Y’s turn. Although this is not going to happen in 2024.

Rumours about the new Model Y, codenamed “Juniper“, have been around for a long time. When the American manufacturer presented the refreshed Model 3 Highland last year, it became more than evident to the vast majority of the company’s users and fans that the Model Y would share the same fate. The logical assumption was that the same improvements – and perhaps some more – that we have already seen on the Model 3, as well as the same design language, should also be applied to Tesla’s compact SUV.
Waiting for the new Model Y “Juniper”
For this reason, many potential Model Y buyers may have postponed their purchase, waiting for the new model, which is surely affecting sales of the current Model Y. That is why Elon Musk has now stepped in to clarify the situation. If you need a Model Y and cannot wait until 2025, without being very clear either whether this refresh will arrive in early or late 2025, buy the current model and don’t keep waiting indefinitely.
“There will be no ‘refresh’ of the Model Y this year. It should be noted that Tesla continuously improves its vehicles, so even one that is only six months newer will be a little better.”

Tesla began slowing Model Y production last month at its Shanghai plant, which is precisely where production of the Model 3 Highland began. A move by the company that many interpreted as an early sign that Tesla might already be preparing to start production of the refreshed Model Y. However, it seems this is not the case and the reason for this production slowdown is something else. It is probably due to the drop in demand caused by the current economic reality and the rumours about the launch of a new model itself.
