Ferrari believes that building a sports car solely for women would be a "complete mistake"

Ferrari argues that it would be a “mistake” to design a sports car for women, because its existing female customers do not want a more feminine Ferrari, but rather to experience the performance and aggressive design of the brand.

“We know there is a significant number of women who want to drive a Ferrari. The important thing we learned is that they do not want a Ferrari for women,” Enrico Galliera, Sales and Commercial Director of Ferrari, told Arabian Business.

“A woman who wants a sports car wants to drive a sports car… The mistake that car [companies] make, and that we are trying not to make, is designing a model for ladies. I designed a car that generates emotion, so men and women have exactly the same need,” Galliera added.

Ferrari also fears that a sports model for women could damage its image with its male customers, who represent the largest percentage of its customer base.

A Ferrari for women?

“If you create a feminine car in the sports car [segment], I’m not talking about a general model, maybe it’s different, but in the world of sport, if I create a Ferrari that is a little less powerful and aggressive than the men’s, they won’t buy it. They won’t buy a women’s sports car. And women won’t buy it either, because why should they be discriminated against? Why should they have a less powerful car?” Galliera pointed out.

And it’s not that Ferrari doesn’t enjoy success with female customers; in fact, the Italian brand has seen a rise in women buying its cars around the world, which, according to them, is not related to specific models, but rather due to the activities the company offers to couples.

“All the activities we do around the world… are carried out in a way where you can enjoy the environment, enjoy good food, good restaurants, these kinds of things so that now we have the partner pushing to come to the event, and this is reducing the distance between Ferrari and the [female] segment…” Galliera explained.

The new, more elegant Ferrari Roma will certainly help attract even more women to Ferrari dealerships, but the company executive is quick to point out that its new model is aimed at both men and women.

According to Galliera, the new Ferrari Roma “is, in terms of performance, a pure Ferrari and can be driven by anyone. But the car’s design is less aggressive, more elegant, so it should reduce the fear that a segment of the population, both female and male, has.”
