BYD Electric Cars Industry Mecánica Technology
For these reasons, the Blade Battery of BYD is so special and profitable
The Blade Battery is an incredible, novel battery that the Chinese company has patented since 2020 and is present across its entire range of vehicles. In this article we explain the reasons behind its unprecedented success

One of the companies leading the shift towards sustainable mobility, both in our market and in others, is BYD (Build Your Dreams). With over 5.1 million new energy vehicles sold, BYD is not only a giant in automobile manufacturing, but also a pioneer in the battery industry. More than 28 years ago, they began their journey in battery production, and since then they have paved the way towards a cleaner and more efficient future in the automotive world.
The flagship of BYD’s innovation is the revolutionary Blade Battery. This energy storage technology is changing the rules of the game in the electric vehicle market, redefining safety and power standards. Produced at BYD’s advanced smart production plant in Chongqing, China, the Blade Battery set a new level of safety and performance since its launch in 2020.
1. Compact size, greater safety
A fundamental feature of the Blade Battery is its compactness. With its unique cell design, the batteries are smaller compared to traditional ones. Even the highest-capacity Blade Batteries are made up of just 178 cells, which allows a cubic volume 50% smaller than other models on the market. In addition, each cell acts as a structural reinforcement, increasing the lateral rigidity of the battery pack. Safety is reinforced with aluminium panels and a layer of high-strength aluminium plate.

2. Advanced technology for greater performance
The Blade Battery is not only compact, but also efficient. Thanks to high-tech components, such as the MOSFET silicon carbide motor control module, it reduces energy losses by 87%, which translates into a 10% increase in range. Furthermore, its performance is optimal in extreme temperatures, operating between -35 °C and 55 °C.
3. In-house development and 28 years of experience
The Blade Battery is the result of more than 28 years of experience at BYD in developing rechargeable batteries. This technology has changed the rules of the game in the electric vehicle market, and its in-house development demonstrates BYD’s commitment to safety, durability and performance, becoming in 2020 the most advanced battery on the market.

4. Sustainability and durability
The Blade Battery is environmentally friendly because, thanks to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology for the cathode, it has a significantly longer service life than conventional lithium batteries. This also eliminates dependence on costly and polluting materials such as nickel and cobalt, contributing to BYD’s commitment to fighting climate change.
5. Durability with over 1 million kilometres
The Blade Battery has proven its durability by undergoing intense testing. It withstands more than 3,000 charge and discharge cycles, which translates into a service life exceeding 1.2 million kilometres, something never seen before.

6. Safety testing
The Blade Battery faces extreme safety tests, including the dreaded nail penetration test. This test simulates an internal short circuit, a dangerous situation that the Blade Battery successfully withstands without its temperature exceeding 60°C. These tests make it one of the safest batteries on the market. It has also successfully passed another of the most demanding tests, the oven test. The test consists of subjecting the battery to temperatures above 300ºC and overcharging by 260%, another test the Blade Battery passed successfully.
7. A factory dedicated to innovation
Blade Batteries are produced at BYD’s ultra-modern “smart factory” in Chongqing, China. This facility, which covers 600 hectares and represents an investment of 10 billion yuan (1.3 billion euros), is the epicentre of battery innovation. Its FinDreams battery institute is devoted exclusively to battery research and development.

8. Research and development without limits
BYD’s battery plant has become a global benchmark in materials research and development. With 7,000 engineers dedicated to battery research, they have obtained 5,000 proprietary patents.
9. The Blade Battery across the BYD range
BYD integrates the Blade Battery as standard equipment across its entire electric vehicle range, such as the BYD DOLPHIN with 150 kW/204 CV, the BYD ATTO 3, a C-segment SUV with 150 kW/204 CV; the BYD SEAL, the new D-segment saloon with up to 390 kW/530 CV in its AWD version; the BYD TANG, an E-segment SUV with 7 seats and 380 kW/517 CV; and the BYD HAN, the elegant E-segment saloon with 380 kW/517 CV.
This advanced technology adapts to various vehicle configurations, giving drivers impressive range and bidirectional charging that supplies power to external devices.

10. A guarantee of confidence
To provide the utmost confidence to its customers, BYD offers an official guarantee of 8 years or 200,000 km for the Blade Battery, complementing the 6-year or 150,000 km coverage it offers across its entire new energy vehicle range. Both guarantees are transferable, adding additional value to each BYD vehicle.
