Ford and Intel are working on Mobii, a driver recognition system

Software applications continue to be gradually introduced into our cars, offering features we could not even have imagined until now. Finding this kind of interesting new functionality is the goal of the Mobii project that Ford and Intel are developing together, and which we tell you about below.

This project aims to introduce cameras inside the vehicle cabin that would be used to recognize the faces of drivers who get behind the wheel and the way they interact with the on-board technology. For now it is a research project, but the first possible uses that could arise from this information are already visible, such as creating profiles of the drivers who get behind the wheel and adapting the vehicle’s characteristics to each driver.

For example, this recognition system could store a list of authorized drivers and prohibit the use of the vehicle by any other driver who gets into the car, unless an authorized driver allows them to use it via the Internet. Depending on the driver, aspects such as the maximum speed allowed for them could also be adjusted (useful, for example, for novice drivers), the number of passengers we can carry could be limited, using the phone could be prevented, or the maximum usage time could be set.

Also in line with personalization, the system could adjust each driver’s preferences such as music, calendar, etc., so if we share the car, the system would recognize us when we get in and set everything to our liking. For now, other interesting features are being investigated that could also be related to driving assistance or issuing warnings in the case of inappropriate behavior at the wheel.
