Ford Mustang California Special 2024: V8 engine and retro touches for an icon
Ford brings back the California special edition for the 2024 Mustang GT Premium, paying tribute to the visual details of the original from 1968

The marvellous and captivating Ford Mustang has left its mark on the roads and in people’s hearts over 59 years of journeying, and now, to mark its 60th anniversary, they have decided to give this icon of Ford a spicier touch by bringing back the California Special edition. During an exciting press conference, Joe Bellino, Mustang Brand Manager, shared exciting details about the arrival of the California Special on the 2024 fastback coupé and convertible Mustang GT Premium models, with incredible details in Rave Blue on the exterior and some interior touches.
But if we look at its exterior and design, we have to go back to 1968, when Ford introduced the first California Special. Closer to the present day, in 2007, Ford decided to give it a new special look, something they have had to do again with this unit to make it stand out from all the previous ones.
California Special package details
The California Special package features striking details in Rave Blue, a distinctive colour that appears on the air intakes, flanking a new horizontal-slat grille complete with low-gloss black stripes. The headlights are surrounded by black bezels, while the specific Mustang GT California Special graphics in medium Rave Blue and high- and low-gloss black appear on the lower sides of the vehicle.

The blue accents are prominent in the interior of the California Special package, where Navy Pier perforated upholstery and Ebony black leather cover the seats. To further elevate the style, there are two-tone stitching with Raptor Blue and Metal Gray threads that extend across the dashboard and doors. The same stitching is also available for the steering wheel and centre console. A badge for this California Special edition appears on the instrument panel and GT/CS floor mats to complete the incredible interior design.

Rave Blue details and a V8 engine
In addition to these touches, the exterior look is enhanced with darkened-tint headlights, the iconic GT/CS badge on the grille and side graphics that blend medium Rave Blue with high- and low-gloss black elements. Two 19.0-inch wheel options are also available. The standard wheels in Carbonized Gray carry a Rave Blue printed logo, while the optional wheels from the Performance Pack combine a machined face with Rave Blue details.

The California Special package can be obtained by adding $1,995 to the price of the Mustang GT Premium and is available in Coupé and Convertible body styles with the option of the 5.0-litre V8 engine with a six-speed manual gearbox or the optional 10-speed automatic transmission.

The 2024 Mustang GT California Special will make its public debut on 16 November at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show. Orders open today, and customers can personalise their own Mustang with the California Special package at Ford.com
