Ford pays homage to a cinema classic with the new Mustang Bullitt

Every motoring enthusiast has a list of films that must include a few car-related titles. Surely if we asked you, 60 Seconds, Fast and Furious or Bullitt would be among your favourites. Well, it seems that Ford shares very similar tastes when it comes to cinema, since they have unveiled a very special Ford Mustang, the limited Bullitt edition, which pays homage to the muscle car driven by Steve McQueen.

It has been 50 years since a dark green Mustang Fastback cruised the streets of San Francisco driven by Frank Bullitt, a police detective. Ford did not want to let such an important anniversary pass for cinema and brand lovers alike, and so they have created this special edition of the Mustang, with the aim of commemorating a true classic.

The American firm took advantage of the Detroit Motor Show to reveal the new Mustang Bullitt, based on the latest generation of the pony car. It receives notable changes over the standard version, both aesthetically and mechanically. Ford wanted to offer a nod to all fans of the film, and that is why they have brought back the original Bullitt after 40 years of us asking about its exact whereabouts.

The powerful 5.0-litre V8 continues to make its presence felt under the bonnet of this iconic Mustang but, this time, the company has decided to raise its output to 475 CV and 569 Nm of torque. These figures will ensure the brutality and power of the eight-cylinder “V” remain intact. At the same time, it will be paired exclusively with a manual gearbox, whose gear knob is white in honour of the original Bullitt.

“This new Bullitt™ is, just like Steve McQueen, cool without trying”, says Darrel Behmer, Mustang design chief. “As a designer, this is my favourite Mustang: no stripes, spoilers or badges. It doesn’t need to shout about anything, it’s simply cool”.

This Mustang will be available in two colours: Shadow Black or the classic Highland Green, which pays tribute to the colour fitted to the film’s star car in Bullitt. They have also taken the opportunity to equip this exclusive vehicle with chrome details and unique 19-inch wheels for this model.

This new Mustang will offer a fresh opportunity for every fan of the film and the model, since they will be able to buy one of them. Without a doubt, the philosophy behind this new Bullitt perfectly embodies everything the original represented and its lucky owners are sure to enjoy this Mustang immensely.
