Explorer Ford Electric Cars SUV
Ford will present its second electric model for the European market next July
Some sources are even more specific and, as we tell you below, dare to state what the name of this new model will be and when it will be officially presented.
The North American manufacturer will present a new fully electric sports crossover aimed at the European market in just over a month. This new Ford model will also be based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, just like the new Explorer, and its production will take place in parallel at the same plant in Cologne (Germany). Or at least that is what the latest reports published by German media indicate.
This information comes to light shortly after the first units of Ford’s new electric SUV for the European market began to roll off the assembly line at its German plant.

For the time being, Ford has only officially announced that it will present its second electric model based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform “soon“, but without specifying an exact date. If the reports published by German media are true, the announcement of this presentation should take place within weeks.
This new model, described as “a sports crossover” by German media, will be the result of the agreement reached between Ford and Volkswagen in 2020, under which the former would use the latter’s MEB platform for a couple of electric models aimed at the European market.
A legendary Ford model could be reborn from its ashes with an electric powertrain
Some other sources suggest, on the other hand, that its name will be Capri. Anyone who is not very young will surely remember the legendary 1969 Ford Capri, a truly successful model for the North American manufacturer, of which more than 400,000 units were sold in just the first two years after it went on sale. The Ford Capri became so popular back then that by 1974 there were already 1.2 million drivers behind the wheel of one of them.

The North American manufacturer would now like to revive that success with this new electric crossover that would inherit the same name. These same sources are also much more precise regarding the date of its presentation, which, according to them, will take place on July 10, 2024.
The new Capri will supposedly bear a certain resemblance, mainly in terms of dimensions as far as we can tell, to other Volkswagen models based on the same platform. In fact, these same sources even dare to state that the new Capri and the Explorer will be Ford’s versions of Volkswagen’s ID.5 and ID.4.
Ford or Volkswagen? Which one do you go for?
We can therefore expect technical specifications very similar to those of the new Explorer, perhaps with a somewhat greater range given that it is a sportier model and therefore likely to have a better aerodynamic coefficient. Let us recall that Ford promises up to 600 km of range for the new Explorer.

The Ford Explorer with dual electric motors shares its powertrain with the ID.4 GTX, with 250 kW of power and a 79 kWh battery pack. We can therefore expect similar specifications for the new Capri. The price, on the other hand, should not be much higher either. In the case of the Explorer, it is available in Spain from 46,562 euros, rising to 58,851 € for the top-of-the-range version.
