GM will unveil Buick's global SUV and the Chevrolet Sonic RS in Detroit

GM is preparing several models for the NAIAS, including the Buick Encore, the new global SUV based on the Cruze or the Sonic, and the Sonic RS, whose predecessor is the Sonic Z-Spec shown at the last SEMA Show.

Plans to update Buick’s model lineup have not only gained momentum in the US, but worldwide as well. Proof of this is the presentation of the Buick Encore, which will take place in January during the Detroit Show and will form the basis for a model that will be global, a presentation that has already been confirmed.

The Buick Encore (a name that, curiously, some Renault carried in their short and extinct past in the US) will be a slightly more compact SUV, based on the platform of the popular Chevrolet Cruze, although there are also some rumors that the base would be even smaller. It is said that they will use the Sonic’s platform for Buick’s next model, which is understandable if we are talking about a global model adaptable to Europe and other markets.

On the other hand, at the NAIAS, the Sonic RS will be unveiled, which is nothing more than a corrected and enlarged adaptation of last year’s Aveo RS.

As with the brand’s other “RS” models, the engine would not be touched, so the changes are purely cosmetic. Ahead of this Sonic’s upcoming presentation, GM gave us a first taste of the model (and of the Cruze Z-Spec) when they showed the Sonic Z-Spec at this year’s SEMA Show, a model that has served as inspiration for the RS.
