Hyundai develops the central side airbag to offer greater safety

Today, car manufacturers are showing great concern for the care of our planet, but they must also watch over the safety of passengers. Hyundai, aware of this, has decided to go further by developing the central side airbag, a new safety measure that will offer greater protection for the occupants of its vehicles. Thanks to its presence, head injuries in the event of an accident can be substantially reduced, one of the most delicate areas of the human body and whose protection helps prevent other injuries from occurring.

Thanks to this new airbag, the Korean brand aims to prevent injuries to passengers in the front seats. It is hidden within the driver’s and front passenger’s seats and will only deploy if someone is seated in either of the two seats, thus considerably reducing injuries to occupants.

And it is that Hyundai estimates that, thanks to the central side airbag, head injuries caused by passengers colliding with each other can be reduced by 80%. This figure is undoubtedly very encouraging, since it represents a considerable increase in the safety of vehicle occupants.

Furthermore, its design will prevent the weight of the occupant itself from causing the structure to give way, while still allowing the head to be cushioned. To achieve this, the engineers at Hyundai have developed an internal retaining strap that keeps the airbag in its intended shape so that the occupant does not move around in the vehicle.

Little by little, this system will be introduced across Hyundai’s model range, since the brand itself expects Euro NCAP to take side impact into account in next year’s tests. With this in mind, the Korean brand will further enhance its strong reputation for safety, an area in which its vehicles have already excelled as demonstrated by the 12 TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards given by the IIHS.

This is how Hyundai aims to look after the safety of its occupants with this airbag, which will most likely be adapted sooner or later for the rear seats. With this in mind, the Korean brand has demonstrated a clear commitment not only to caring for the environment, but also to its customers, who will be better protected thanks to this safety measure that will gradually be present across the entire model range.
