Hyundai shows how far its electric vehicles can go with the RN24 prototype
The RN24 prototype is a demonstration of how Hyundai is able to combine the development of new electric vehicles with the driving experience and excitement typical of its high-performance N line.
Hyundai N, the high-performance division of the South Korean brand, has just unveiled the RN24, a prototype that aims to show where the limit of the brand’s future high-performance electric models will lie. This project began with the goal of integrating a high-performance electric powertrain into the smallest possible space. As a result, Hyundai has managed to install a 478 kW powertrain paired with an 84 kWh battery pack in an ultra-compact chassis based on those used in cars competing in the World Rally Championship.
This powertrain, which includes two electric motors and an 84 kWh battery pack, takes as its reference that of the IONIQ 5 N, the high-performance version of the most popular electric car from the South Korean manufacturer, based on the E-GMP platform. However, Hyundai has been able to integrate it in this case into a vehicle that barely exceeds 4 metres in length, while the IONIQ 5 N reaches 4.72 metres.

Compared with the IONIQ 5 N, the RN24’s wheelbase has been reduced by 34 centimetres, from 3 metres to 2.66 metres. It should also be noted that, although the RN24 has an open chassis, a potential production model could have a conventional one while keeping its dimensions, with a weight of around 1.88 tonnes. This model would also have a top speed of 240 km/h and be capable of reaching 100 km/h from a standstill in less than 3.4 seconds.
The future looks exciting
Hyundai describes the RN24 as a “Rolling Laboratory“, with which the brand will be able to find out how far it is possible to go with current technology in the development of high-performance electric vehicles. According to the company, the engineers responsible for this project had complete creative freedom in designing the chassis, and opted for one in a style similar to that of rally cars. Likewise, the engine control system is also inspired by competition models, allowing the driver to adjust power output, throttle sensitivity, braking regeneration and power balance via buttons on the steering wheel.

“Hyundai N is not just a brand but a commitment to innovation and high performance. The RN24 is a testament to our enormous ambition for the future. The RN24 exemplifies Hyundai N’s commitment to electric technology applied to high-performance vehicles, always prioritising the driving experience. This prototype demonstrates that there is still enormous potential to explore and great advances are yet to come.”
