Iberdrola plans to install 25,000 charging points for electric vehicles within four years

The electric vehicle is steadily gaining ground. To speed up its arrival, Iberdrola plans to install 25,000 new charging points by 2021.

The electric vehicle is accelerating. Its growing presence in the future plans of every manufacturer on the market is now joined by the increasing interest its arrival is generating across all related sectors. As a result of that greater interest and the ever-growing proliferation of new electrified models, Iberdrola, one of the leading energy companies in the Spanish market, plans to install 25,000 new charging points for electric vehicles by 2021.

Of those 25,000 new charging points, 16,000 will be installed in private homes, while the remaining 9,000 would be located at companies that wish to offer this service to their employees or customers.

Although the figure may seem high, the truth is that it remains low, as it amounts to just installing 6,250 charging points per year, and, given the distribution Iberdrola is proposing, it appears that electric vehicles will continue to lack sufficient charging points on the roads.

According to Iberdrola, charging an electric vehicle is, on average, ten times cheaper than the petrol we fill up with at a petrol station. In addition, the electricity company will market a new energy plan specifically designed for charging electric vehicles at private homes, thanks to which the cost of electricity for charging could be reduced to 50 cents per 100 kilometres if charging is carried out at night, between 01:00 and 07:00.

The new plan will be framed within its smart mobility plan Smart Mobility, and the tariffs will cover both the electric charging infrastructure as well as the installation and warranty of the same. Each customer will have a personalised supply contract specific to charging vehicles at their home, which can be managed remotely and in real time through their mobile devices.

Iberdrola has committed to ensuring that the electricity supplied under these contracts is entirely sustainable and of green origin.
