Infiniti will add more Mercedes engines to its future models

When Infiniti brought the new Q50, the successor to the previous G in its saloon body style, to the Geneva Motor Show it knew it could not use the 3.7 V6 engine it presented in Detroit in January. Instead, it used the unit that is essential in the European market, the diesel. This 2.2d has been borrowed from Daimler, although refined according to the criteria of Infiniti’s engineers.
But the transfer of engines from Mercedes-Benz will not end there, nor will it be limited to the Q50. The Dutch magazine Autoweek has been able to confirm the next engines that will complete Infiniti’s new range as a result of the alliance with Daimler. For the moment, those that have been revealed belong to the lower end of the range, that is, the most fuel-efficient ones. The 3.7 V6, for example, has not been confirmed for sale with the Q50 in Europe.
Alongside the 2.2d, the luxury brand’s new saloon can also be ordered with a petrol engine roughly equivalent to this diesel. It will be the turbocharged 2.0 that it shares with the Mercedes-Benz A250 and E250. In the German models the unit produces 211 CV, but it is expected that Infiniti will tune it as it did with the previous one, so its performance figures may vary.
That said, the Q50 will have nothing to envy the Class A and E in terms of reduced consumption and emissions, according to the director of Infiniti’s Dutch subsidiary, Stefan Erkelens. The next product from this manufacturer to use the 2.2d will be the Q70, the name that will be given to the M when it receives its corresponding restyling in 2014. According to Erkelens, this update will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show next year.
