Jaguar Land Rover cuts vehicle production due to chip shortage

The British company is facing several problems in obtaining materials for vehicle manufacturing, especially semiconductors, and is facing a production cut

We have been dragging on the semiconductor shortage problem for several months, especially since the pandemic ended and everything seemed to return to normal. But this is not entirely the case. The pandemic is still present, although its effects are more under control, and we are still dealing with the problems that arose from the total shutdown of the industry worldwide.

The automotive industry has been hit hard by the lack of these components, and it seemed to be gradually resolving the issue and returning to pre-pandemic levels. But the reality is that it remains a rather serious problem. So much so that it has affected vehicle manufacturing at Jaguar Land Rover.

According to various British media outlets, the company has reduced production of several of its models in favour of others that are more popular and have guaranteed sales. According to this information, Jaguar Land Rover has decided to reduce production of the Range Rover Velar and the Jaguar F-Pace, which will go from two shifts a day to one shift.

The two models that will benefit from this production cut will be the brand’s flagship, the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport. These guarantee a good sales volume, so they can offset the production cut of the other, more profitable models.

To increase production of the Range Rover, a shift will be added at the plant that manufactures the bodywork for this model. At the Halewood plant, where the Range Rover Evoque and the Discovery Sport are built, which are cheaper and generate less profit, the two shifts will also be reduced to one.

The Nitra plant in Slovakia will not be affected and will continue producing the Defender as before. A solution to this problem could be close. Jaguar Land Rover has signed an agreement with Wolfspeed in the United States to acquire silicon carbide semiconductors for its upcoming electric models. These will arrive from 2024, so the company will have materials to manufacture these models.
