During the last Geneva Motor Show, Kia seized the opportunity to unveil a very elegant concept. It is called Imagine, and now the manufacturer’s head of design has revealed that it will become a production model very soon.

Luc Donckerwolke, in a recent interview, commented that the Kia Imagine foreshadows a new “emotional flagship”. Little is known about it, but everything points to it being a fully electric SUV coupé.

Kia’s Head of Design, Donckerwolke, has not gone into much detail about the future Kia Imagine, but he hinted that the production model could arrive in around three years. The new fully electric SUV coupé from Kia will belong to the C-segment, and the brand itself described it as a blend of a “muscular utility sports car, an elegant and athletic family saloon and a versatile, spacious SUV”.

The former designer of Lamborghini also hinted that the model could echo the Imagine when he said “I see nothing that is not really feasible”. However, he acknowledged that there could be some “cost-related problems” in putting some of the concept’s most exclusive features into production.

Kia Imagine concept, closer to production

The Kia Imagine concept used a hybrid powertrain and had a unique front fascia that avoided the traditional tiger-nose grille. It has been replaced by the so-called “tiger mask”, which showed the illuminated outline of a grille that also featured LED lights.

The concept that Kia presented at the Geneva Motor Show had a flowing bodywork, pronounced wheel arches and a very muscular line. It also featured 22-inch wheels, suicide-type rear doors and a windscreen glass that merged with the roof.

It had four seats, but everything points to this having to change when it reaches production, since it featured a floating centre console and a unique instrument cluster with 21 small screens.

Kia has not disclosed further specifications for the concept, but it said the model had a fully electric architecture and would use a “compact drivetrain”. The latter was powered by a battery, not revealed, that was capable of wireless charging.

An electric based on the Kia Imagine

One of the design studio’s goals was to create a rippling effect and a sense of movement. They achieved this through creases in the front air curtain and its flanks, with different lengths and angles. The paint is made up of six layers, applied by hand with a chrome effect. It aims to offer warmth and comfort. As for the interior, it is developed in leather with silk details.

For now, the brand has not revealed many more details about the arrival in production of a new fully electric SUV coupé, but all the rumours suggest that it could be largely based on the Imagine by Kia concept that surprised the automotive sector at the recent Geneva event.
