Land Rover Defender: new model details for 2016

It is still more than a year before the new Land Rover Defender goes on sale, but we already know a few things about the model that will replace the current generation of this iconic off-roader. A concept model will probably appear at one of the motor shows held throughout 2015, where we may be able to get a preview of its look and equipment.

For now, we know it will have an aluminium-based frame and a more modern design, which will probably move it away from the traditional design that has accompanied it for so many years. Its launch date will be after the summer of 2016, and even so, let us review some of what we already know about this model.

The information made public suggests it will be built on an aluminium structure, a version of the company’s monocoque platform, with the addition of a superstructure made of the same material to offer greater strength and rigidity. The current version’s weight is put at 2,700 kg, but the use of aluminium will allow the final weight of the vehicle to be controlled better.

The engines fitted to this new Land Rover Discovery will be the new four-cylinder Ingenium units in Jaguar-Land Rover versions, although a V6 is also mentioned, so the range will be quite complete. The gearbox fitted as standard will be automatic, with eight or nine speeds, and no manual gearbox is expected, which surprises us.

The company assures that this Land Rover Discovery will be capable of tackling any terrain and driving over it without problems, thanks to its Premium equipment. What Land Rover does not make clear is whether this refers to advanced engineering to meet those challenges or to comforts typical of other vehicles. Possibly they mean both possibilities, and the vehicle will have a powerful and durable engine, but also equipment to make the journey more comfortable. We will have to wait to see it.
