Lego recreates the legendary Volkswagen Transporter
400,000 Lego pieces is what twelve experienced specialists needed to build the classic Volkswagen T2 that was presented at the first leisure and travel fair in Munich.
The worldwide fame of the Volkswagen Transporter or “Combi” as a representative vehicle has led to thousands of adaptations, such as the one recently built at full scale with Lego bricks.
Likewise, this is not the first time Lego has recreated a vehicle. A few weeks ago we featured a replica of a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 made of Lego, a replica that was also faithful to the dimensions of the original vehicle.

Volkswagen Transporter: 400,000 Lego bricks
All of us as children have at some point played with the famous Lego bricks, making random constructions and, on many occasions, meaningless ones. Well, 12 specialists have managed to create the well-known Volkswagen Transporter at full scale, over 5 metres long, 1.9 metres wide and 2 metres high.
Using images and 3D reconstructions, they were able to understand the construction plan and the number of pieces they would need. However, the most laborious task was calculating the rigidity of the walls and windows to ensure stability.
Everything was going perfectly until they discovered they were missing 20,000 transparent bricks for the windows; moreover, there were no supplies left and the deadline was approaching. After six weeks of work, 700 kg in weight and with the design finished, they had achieved the goal of creating a “Lego-fied” Volkswagen Transporter .

Right down to the last detail, including the interior
Without a doubt, they perfectly recreated what a Volkswagen Transporter looks like inside, and also did it with Lego pieces. They used colours identifying the period and the famous Westfalia pop-up roof, so popular among campers.
Finally, details and elements were added such as the gas stoves, a radio from the era, the toiletry bag every traveller carries on their trips, and above all the perfect division of the living spaces, which made this idea of one of the specialists a work of art.
