Lexus ES 300h: the new hybrid saloon in the luxury segment

Fourth-generation hybrid system, new platform and sophisticated design for the new Lexus ES 300h, the new saloon from the Japanese brand.

Lexus continues adding hybrid models to its range. Alongside the long-awaited compact SUV, the Lexus UX, a new saloon will join this year, positioned above the current Lexus GS, at least in terms of size.

Unlike the GA-L platform used in the Lexus LC Coupé and the top-of-the-range LS saloon, the Lexus ES uses the new global GA-K platform, which is also suitable for smaller cars than this saloon. Lexus promises greater safety and a sportier drive.

The F-Sport versions will be distinguished by their 19-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler and specific grille, and may come with two exclusive body colours. In addition, they will optionally feature Lexus’s AVS variable adaptive suspension, the same as offered on the Lexus LC Coupé.

Fourth-generation hybrid engine

There is still no plug-in hybrid version. Lexus continues to rely on its self-charging hybrid system, now in its fourth generation. For the Lexus ES 300h, it combines a new 4-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 2.5 litres and a newly developed electric motor, which is more compact and powerful.

The announced combined output is 160 kW (218 CV), and the batteries, which remain nickel-metal hydride rather than lithium, are now more compact so they can be placed under the rear seat without taking up boot space. Lexus claims that the hybrid management system delivers power in a manner similar to a conventional petrol-engined car, with the advantage of an average combined consumption of just 4.7 l/100 km.

The interior of the Lexus ES 300h

The dashboard design of the Lexus ES 300h anticipates the pattern Lexus will follow in its future models: more sense of freedom for the passenger, and all controls grouped closely towards the driver. The multimedia screen measures 12.3 inches, and alongside the second generation of Lexus’s Remote Touch touch-control system, a voice recognition system with an assistant for controlling a smartphone is added.

The F-Sport versions feature a new metallic finish called Hadori, inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of Japanese swords. Among the more sophisticated equipment, customers of the Lexus ES 300h can opt for the new PurePlay high-fidelity system by Mark Levinson, with 17 speakers and surround sound.

Lexus also presents in the new ES the evolution of its safety and driver-assistance package, Lexus Safety System+, which will be standard on all Lexus ES versions. The new features include a daytime cyclist detection system and an improved night-time pedestrian detection system thanks to a radar with a longer range. Also new is the adaptive lighting system, which, rather than simply switching automatically between high and low beam, can dim each of the 24 individual LEDs that make up each headlight to maximise road illumination without dazzling oncoming vehicles.
