Listen to the mysterious Mc20, the new sports car from Maserati

Not even the Covid-19 pandemic has stopped the Maserati MC20 from defying convention, as it has been spotted driving through the streets of Modena

The Trident marque has twice let us glimpse the test units of what will be the brand’s new sports car, the Maserati MC20. Hidden beneath the usual camouflage on test cars or, as we also know them in the automotive world, “mules”, the prototypes that have served as launch models for this car have hinted at its basic shape, dimensions and styling, but we were left wondering whether this was a new sports car with a traditional fossil-fuel combustion engine or whether the MC20 could be the first electric car and sports car from Maserati.

Well, the doubts have been dispelled thanks to a video recorded by an enthusiast who captured part of the filming of the second of the test unit’s outings, moving through the heart of the streets of the brand’s home city, Modena.

Besides the images of the vehicle from every angle, the rear view leaves no room for doubt: it is a car powered by a petrol engine, at least the example that has been used to expand the photo catalogue of the new car’s preview.

Not only does it have a dual exhaust outlet in its rear bumper, something that doesn’t always guarantee the usefulness or authenticity of a car element, as Porsche well demonstrated when adding fake exhaust tailpipes to some of the Taycan’s mules, but because, thanks to the video recording you can watch below, the hoarse, gruff roar of the Maserati MC20 seen leaves no room for doubt: it is not an electric car.

This can be read two ways.

What does the future hold for the Maserati MC20?

At first glance, the Maserati MC20 could be presented as a new sports model from the Italian brand to add to its collection of production cars.

On the other hand, given the European context that regulates the sale of new cars according to maximum carbon dioxide production limits, and since Maserati claims it is about to enter a new era and has therefore seen fit to present this new historical phase at an event postponed until September, to be known as MMXX, where the production version of the car in question is expected to be unveiled, it is feasible that the Maserati MC20 will initially be sold as a vehicle with a combustion engine and that, later on, a hybrid variant will be introduced, giving the brand justification for asserting that the letters MC20 are in keeping with the MMXX event.

Be that as it may, a Maserati is always a Maserati. And we were able to confirm this during the test drive of the Maserati Levante, the brand’s best-selling SUV and model, whose Trofeo version is a surface-to-surface missile dressed as a crossover.

By DNA, by history, by distinction, it turns heads of anyone who encounters one, and even more so if it wears livery similar to a zebra’s and cruises through the pedestrian streets of a city like Modena, as the unit that was filmed did, proving that the Maserati MC20 roars!
