Mercedes-Benz continues forward with the EQ family: six new EV models will arrive by 2022

Mercedes-Benz is pressing ahead with its electric offensive through the EQ family, which will welcome six new members by 2022.

Mercedes-Benz showed its clear intentions some time ago of making electric cars a dedicated range within its brand, and those intentions have not waned to this day. The star brand already has two EQ models in its current lineup, the EQC and EQV, which are responsible for representing that division. However, Mercedes-Benz has just confirmed that, by 2022, we will see as many as six new models bearing the EQ name and, of course, fully electric powertrains.

This strategy should no longer surprise us, since many brands are betting on this type of mobility. Following the arrival of the EQC, Mercedes-Benz paved the way for numerous models of similar nature, which will be based on vehicles already in the range and others that will be born on the brand’s new modular platform.

One of the first all-new models to reach the market will be the Mercedes-Benz EQS, an electric saloon with a coupé-like profile that aims to show that luxury, sportiness and sustainability are not incompatible. This new vehicle is expected to make its appearance during the first half of 2021, which is quite likely given its level of development.

Further on, two more modest models of undoubted importance in the market will join the electric flagship saloon. We refer to the EQA and EQB, vehicles that will take the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLB as their starting points respectively, models that use a platform prepared for PHEV variants and that ease the transition to a 100% electric powertrain.

However, the truly new developments will come with the Mercedes-Benz EQE, the 100% electric version of the German firm’s upper-mid-size saloon. The year 2022, meanwhile, will be reserved for the EQE and EQS SUVs, the SUV versions of the EQE and EQS, which will seek to open a new path for electric luxury SUVs, a segment that will also succumb to this type of powertrain.

But the star brand’s plans do not end here. Mercedes-Benz aims to have 25 PHEV vehicles in its model range by 2025, which will help it reach its goal of completely reducing CO2 emissions by 2039, which will imply an almost complete eradication of combustion engines or the use of synthetic fuel.
