Mercedes-Benz GLE; the replacement for the ML is already here

GLE 1

Some time ago, Mercedes announced that it would restructure the commercial names of all its models on sale.

In this way, all off-road models would be named GL followed by a final letter corresponding to their segment. A few months ago we met the first of Mercedes’s new SUV range, the GLE Coupé, and today Mercedes presents the GLE, replacement for the current ML.

The GLE is not a completely new model, but rather a facelift that has been used to introduce the brand’s new nomenclature. This way we find a model that is recognisable at first sight, with a more dynamic front design, in the style of the brand’s latest creations. The light units adopt a longer, teardrop-shaped design, while the bumper mouldings are now much more similar to those of the GLE Coupé.

The side design is practically identical to the current ML — let us remember that the chassis/structure does not change — while at the rear it gets new lights, as well as a more pleasing bumper with the exhaust outlets integrated.

Inside, the changes are also minimal, although the GLE gets a multifunction steering wheel with an improved design, as well as a more advanced and easier-to-use multimedia system. In addition, new colour options have been added for the upholstery and trim to make the GLE’s interior as comfortable and attractive a space as possible.

Mechanically, the GLE takes a step forward over the ML, adopting the latest engines that Mercedes has developed. In petrol, you will be able to choose between a 3.0 V6 Biturbo with 333 CV and 480 Nm (GLE 400), a 4.7 V8 Biturbo with 435 CV and 700 Nm (GLE 500), and the range’s flagship option, the GLE 63 AMG S, powered by a 5.5 V8 Biturbo engine producing 585 CV and 760 Nm. On the diesel side there are two already familiar options: the 2.1 four-cylinder with 204 CV (GLE 250d) and the 3.0 V6 with 258 CV and 620 Nm (GLE 350d).

For the first time in a Mercedes SUV, it will be possible to buy a plug-in hybrid variant, called the GLE 500e, with a total output of 442 CV and maximum torque of 650 Nm. It will offer an electric-only range of 30 km, with an official combined consumption of 3.3 litres per 100 km.
