Mercedes-Benz will offer the 9G-TRONIC transmission for the S500 Coupé

In a few months, one of the German brand’s flagship models will receive a new dose of technology and innovation.
We’re talking about the S-Class Coupé from Mercedes-Benz, which in its rear-wheel-drive 500 version will come as standard with the new 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox.
This new gearbox has not yet been rolled out across Mercedes’s range of vehicles, and for now only the E-Class in its 350 BlueTEC model is able to be equipped with it. In the very near future, this transmission will also begin to be fitted to Mercedes hybrids.
The 9G-TRONIC takes over the functions of the classic 7G-TRONIC PLUS, which, although it has performed more than adequately and has been updated every so often, has ended up being overtaken by fierce competition that has long enjoyed automatic transmissions with 8 and 9 speeds.
With this new gearbox, Mercedes introduces a transmission that is lighter than its predecessor and more advanced. With 9 speeds, it maintains the compactness and size of the previous transmission while increasing its durability. In fact, this new 9G-TRONIC can handle up to 1,000 Nm, something unthinkable for the 7-speed transmission.

Thanks to the 9 speeds, two more than the previous automatic gearbox, it is able to lower engine revs even further when the vehicle is cruising at a steady speed. This means reduced noise and engine revolutions, with a consequent drop in fuel consumption.
The S500 Coupé will improve its acceleration and consumption figures, which were already impressive, thanks to a 4.7 V8 biturbo engine delivering 455 CV and 700 Nm.
This gearbox will also be offered in the coming months as part of the CLS facelift, which we already told you about here.
