Mercedes plans to develop navigation systems with live HD maps for its future models

Mercedes has just unveiled Live HD Map. This new system will transmit live information and will complement the autonomous vehicle perfectly.

Technology is a difficult field to work in, since it is in constant evolution and brands’ creations become obsolete quite easily. To prevent this from happening, car manufacturers must anticipate and develop technologies with an eye on the future, something Mercedes does very well. The brand with the star has just unveiled a new concept for the maps used in its navigation system, an idea that will be within our reach much sooner than we think.

Mercedes has focused on creating an HD map capable of transmitting all kinds of information live, that is, in real time. In this way, any unexpected event will be relayed to the driver immediately, but this is not the only novelty. The navigation system of the brand with the star has been completely redesigned, so that it is able to reach advanced technology and display much more than conventional maps.

To make this reality possible, Mercedes has drawn on all its knowledge of autonomous driving, since the new maps are presented as the perfect complement for forgetting the steering wheel. This new system uses a sensor that reads all movements occurring on the road, so that it will be possible to analyse traffic, changes in the upcoming streets along our route and, at the same time, the vehicles around us.

At the same time, the Mercedes of the future will be connected directly to dealerships, so that they can update the maps live and in real time with any changes occurring on the roads. Another novelty is that, as we have mentioned, the new maps from the German brand will work in harmony with autonomous driving, since they will send information directly to the car with the aim of having it move according to traffic conditions.

For example, if the HD map detects that lanes are significantly obstructed, it will send the information directly to our Mercedes, so that the vehicle will look for a better alternative in a completely autonomous way. This new function will completely change the concept we currently have of GPS systems and, little by little, more innovations will be introduced.

Mercedes intends to apply this new system to the future S-Class and E-Class, two luxury saloons that are taking their first steps in the field of autonomous driving. At the moment it is a project still under development, but it will be only a short time before the next Mercedes vehicles include this option.
