MG Motor announces the upcoming launch of the compact SUV MG 4X

Its focus on versatility, efficiency and innovative technologies such as the optional semi-solid-state battery make the MG 4X an important step for MG Motor in its global expansion strategy.

MG Motor, the British brand belonging to the SAIC group, is set to expand its range of electric vehicles with the launch of the MG 4X, a compact SUV derived from the recent MG4 Urban.

This new model, designed specifically for international markets, will be officially presented at the Auto China show in Beijing, which kicks off at the end of April 2026.

As is customary shortly before an imminent launch in the Chinese market, the homologation process at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of this Asian country has revealed in advance some of the main technical specifications of this new model.

Is the MG 4X the compact SUV you’ve been waiting for?

With dimensions of 4.50 meters in length, 1.85 meters in width and 1.62 meters in height, and a wheelbase of 2.74 meters, the MG 4X sits in the compact SUV segment. Likewise, its kerb weight ranges from 1,640 to 1,755 kg, while the gross vehicle weight ranges from 2,076 to 2,191 kg depending on the version and equipment.

In terms of mechanics, the MG 4X uses the E3 platform – the same as the MG4 Urban – and features a single motor integrated into the front axle. The entry version incorporates a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering a maximum output of 125 kW. There is also a higher-performance version, with a slightly more powerful motor reaching 150 kW.

Either way, one of the most notable novelties of this new model is the range of batteries on offer. Like the MG4 Urban, the MG 4X will be able to fit a semi-solid-state battery based on manganese, with only 5% liquid electrolyte. Thanks to this technology, the manufacturer promises a range of up to 510 km under the Chinese CLTC homologation cycle, along with a notable improvement in thermal stability and superior performance in cold climates.

Additionally, as an alternative, the vehicle can be fitted with conventional LFP battery packs, although their exact capacity has not yet been detailed.

In the technology and safety section, MG Motor has partnered with Horizon Robotics to integrate an advanced driver assistance system. The MG 4X includes Navigate on Pilot (NOA), which enables advanced autonomous navigation, in addition to automated parking functions. According to the brand, these systems offer one of the best driving experiences within their price segment.

The MG 4X positions itself as an attractive option in the competitive compact electric SUV market, where it will compete with models such as the BYD Atto 3 or equivalents.
