MG Motor is working on the development of a city electric car under the name MG2
With the MG2, the British manufacturer aims to drive the brand’s growth in the European market, offering a compact, practical and affordable electric option.
MG Motor is working to bring to market, by around 2027, a new affordable electric model, with a price expected to sit below 30,000 euros. It will be named MG2 and will serve as the entry point to the British manufacturer’s electric range, which by then will already include seven fully electric vehicles in its lineup.
This information comes from within the company itself and has been revealed by David Allison, head of MG Motor in the United Kingdom, in an interview with the media. In the spring of 2024, this same executive had already indicated that the company was considering launching a city electric model with a restrained price. However, at that time he mentioned an even lower price, below 25,000 euros, and a much earlier launch, around 2025.

Although the timeline for this project has been substantially extended and the target selling price has also been adjusted to current market realities, the original idea remains on the path MG Motor.
“I have always believed that would be the next big market. As Europe moves toward electric mobility, the simplest way to bring prices down is to reduce size.”
MG Motor does not want to miss this train
In the interview with the media, this MG Motor executive has expressed optimism about the project after seeing the commercial success of the new Renault 5. The cumulative sales volume of the French manufacturer’s compact electric car has shown that there is real demand, higher than expected, for this type of vehicle with electric propulsion and a restrained price. For this reason, Allison considers it of vital importance for MG Motor to get on board this train and compete in this segment as soon as possible.
The aim of MG Motor, however, will not be to offer the cheapest city electric car on the market. With the MG2, the British manufacturer does not seek to compete with the Dacia Spring or with some models from Leapmotor, among others, but rather to offer a competitive product with an adequate level of quality and equipment. The idea is therefore to offer a product with a high value for money, without entering the race to offer the cheapest city electric car.

Finally, it should be noted that although we would like to know some technical details of this future MG2, for now the company has only revealed its intention to bring this vehicle to market without offering further details. All we know is that it will be the entry model to the MG Motor range and will therefore be positioned below the current MG4.
