MG will return in 2021 with an electric sports car that will have the soul of a coupé

MG aims to return to its purest roots: the manufacture of sports cars. This time it intends to go further, and a new sports car with coupé styling is expected on European roads in 2021, one that will also be fully electric.

This new electric coupé sports car from the brand is based on the MG E-Motion concept, which was unveiled in 2017. Now, thanks to one of the patents filed, we can learn more about the future electric car due in 2021.

The images that have been published give us a preview of the future production model. The images leaked online supposedly come from patents used to protect the design of a production model. Furthermore, in these leaks, one can see a design developed from the concept, the MG E-Motion, which was presented at the Shanghai Motor Show in 2017.

Some sources have pointed out that the lines seen in these patents recall the sports cars of Aston Martin. Above all in the front section and in the stretched rear lights.

What will the future fully electric sports car from MG be like?

For the moment, few details are known about the future fully electric sports car, but what is known is that it could enter production in 2021, rather than in 2020 as was discussed a few months ago. However, it is not clear whether the pandemic currently affecting the whole world could affect the launch of this long-awaited electric model.

The MG E-Motion, which arrived as a concept in 2017, features eye-catching butterfly-opening doors and has seating for four passengers. Connectivity is also essential in this type of vehicle, and the electric coupé from MG will feature an advanced system and touchscreens for passengers in both the front and rear seats.

This new coupé arriving in 2021 will be powered by an in-house developed electric powertrain. Experts have assured that it will be capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds. As for range, it will offer around 498 kilometres. The MG E-Motion, the concept on which the electric sports car will be based, shares the same front styling treatment as the MG ZS SUV.

Its profile is that of a classic sports car, with vertical rear lights and a fairly clean rear design. A spokesperson for MG has noted that the market was ready to receive an electric sports car from MG. For its part, Zhang Liang, head of product planning at the carmaker, already stated in 2017 that MG could put the car into production if the reactions to its presentation at the Shanghai Motor Show were positive.
