How do you improve an already legendary supercar? Porsche and Michelin have taken the iconic Carrera GT to another level: new high-tech tyres allow it to brake up to 12 metres sooner from 200 km/h

Porsche and its partner Michelin have carried out a notable update to the iconic supercar Carrera GT, almost 20 years after its last production. The collaboration between both brands has resulted in the development of new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, designed specifically to improve the performance, safety and dynamism of this legendary sports car.

The Porsche Carrera GT, manufactured between 2003 and 2006 in a limited series of 1,270 units, was one of the fastest supercars of its time, thanks to its V10 engine producing 612 CV. Originally designed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, this vehicle reached a top speed of 330 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Now, with the addition of the new tyres developed by Michelin, the Carrera GT renews its capacity to deliver a high-performance driving experience, both on the road and on the track.

More precision and control at the limit

The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres have been designed with dual-compound technology, which optimises grip in both dry and wet conditions. According to Mathieu Greco, Michelin Development Engineer, the tread is divided into two zones: the inner section uses silica to maximise grip on wet surfaces, while the outer section is made of materials such as carbon black, designed to deliver the best performance when dry. This combination not only improves vehicle control but also reduces braking distance, by up to 12 metres less at a speed of 200 km/h, and 2.5 metres from 100 km/h.

Jörg Bergmeister, development driver and ambassador for Porsche, was one of the first to test these new tyres in different environments, including the famous Nürburgring circuit. “The Carrera GT has always been a dream car, but now, with these tyres, its performance reaches a new level,” said Bergmeister. The improvement in predictability and response at the limit gives the driver superior control in demanding situations, which translates into safer and more dynamic driving.

In addition to increasing precision in corners and quick manoeuvres, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ensure better behaviour on track, allowing the Carrera GT to set faster lap times with greater ease. Bergmeister highlighted that the vehicle’s greater stability at the limit not only makes it faster, but also makes it easier to drive at a high pace without compromising safety.

A legacy that continues to evolve

This is the second tyre update the Carrera GT has received since its launch. The original Pilot Sport PS2 tyres were replaced by the Michelin Pilot Super Sport in 2013, and now the Pilot Sport Cup 2, with the exclusive “N” marking of Porsche, represent the latest advance in the development of the model. Porsche’s dedication to keeping this classic up to date reinforces the brand’s commitment to its customers and to preserving the Carrera GT’s legacy.
