Mitsubishi's Mitsubishi Montero could return in 2027, and this is everything we know about it

The popular Japanese off-roader could return as a plug-in hybrid within a few years, although not much detail is known about it yet.

Although in our market it is known as Mitsubishi Montero, in the rest of the markets it is known as Mitsubishi Pajero, a name that was changed in Spanish-speaking markets. Production of this model ended in 2021 and left a gap in the brand’s 4×4 lineup. But, according to information that has leaked in Japan, this model could return in 2027.

The news came from the magazine Best Car and points to the return of this model happening that year, although this comeback will bring some changes compared to the model we know. This has delighted many fans of the model, since earlier reports indicated that the model would be discontinued and would have no successor.

An eagerly awaited return

The return of the Mitsubishi Montero is practically confirmed, but we don’t have much information about it. It is speculated that the new Montero (or Pajero, depending on the market) will have a lot in common with the concept car GC PHEV, which was presented in 2013. However, some also think that it could arrive with a more classic design, seeking to bring back the image of the early Monteros.

What is clear is that the mechanicals will be electrified. Whether it will be a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid is still up in the air. The most likely option is a model with a plug-in hybrid engine. This would, in principle, allow a range approaching 100 kilometres in electric mode.

Mitsubishi’s membership in the Mitsubishi-Renault-Nissan alliance will allow various elements of this model to be shared, or other parts from these brands to be used, to make this new Mitsubishi Montero a reality. In its 40 years of commercial life, the Montero has managed to sell around 3.3 million units, so its return could be quite an event.
